Download PDF by François Recanati: Literal Meaning

By François Recanati

in keeping with the dominant place between philosophers of language at the present time, we will legitimately ascribe determinate contents (such as truth-conditions) to average language sentences, independently of what the speaker really skill. This view contrasts with that held by way of usual language philosophers fifty years in the past: in keeping with them, speech acts, no longer sentences, are the first bearers of content material. François Recanati argues for the relevance of this controversy to the present debate approximately semantics and pragmatics. Is 'what is expounded' (as against in basic terms implied) made up our minds by way of linguistic conventions, or is it a side of 'speaker's meaning'? will we desire pragmatics to mend truth-conditions? what's 'literal meaning'? To what quantity is semantic composition an artistic strategy? How pervasive is context-sensitivity? Recanati offers an unique and insightful defence of 'contextualism', and provides an educated survey of the spectrum of positions held by means of linguists and philosophers operating on the semantics/pragmatics interface.

New PDF release: Analyse und Messbarkeit rhetorischer

By Katharina Wuttke
